DMN Computer Services been providing spyware and  virus removal services for our clients for over 25 years.  Over the years virus and  spyware infections have become increasingly more complex and infections occur more than ever before.   New viruses and spyware appear on a daily basis.  Surfing the internet without any virus or spyware protection are days of the past.  In today's world it's a must.

Virus vs. Spyware The Difference

In today's world, it is increasingly more difficult to tell the two apart.  Indeed, both viruses and spyware use the same methods to infect your computer.  One of the biggest differences is in it's purpose.

All viruses are designed to install their code on any available computer.  By email, malicious  website or any of dozens of ways.  The virus will by means of stealth steal all information possible and send it to it's data dump computer somewhere on the internet.  A virus will try to avoid detection, which is why a successful virus avoids harming your system software or hardware.  The last thing it would want is to alert the computer user / owner of it's presence !   Thank goodness most people writing them don't have the skills.

All spyware is software that tracks your habits on the internet, or that was how it was suppose to work just a few years ago.  Most people don't think about what is being done to their computer when they install a toolbar in their browser.  The toolbars do serve a valid purpose, giving you features you find useful.  I myself use Google Toolbar.   The trade off go like this, here use our toolbar, we make surfing the internet easier, in return you agree to let us track your habits on the internet so our ad department can better target ad's to people like you.  These features can and do slow your computer down.  Now that's where spyware started.  Today spyware has progress to the point it's almost identical to a virus.  They steal your information, download other spyware like programs.  Use your network connection to send their spam email across the internet, in general abuse your system.

Other than that, there really isn't much of a difference between the two

Is my pc infected ?

Some of the symptoms of infection are your home page has changed, your searches get redirected to sites you have never seen before.   Increase in network activity, security programs you have never seen or installed telling you that your computer is infected.  Your computer takes forever to boot up.  Programs mysteriously crashing.  These are just some of the indications you may have an infection.

Rouge Security Programs

Some of the latest viruses/spywares are the Rouge Security Programs. The programmers create professional looking clones of real products, they look completely legitimate.  To the untrained eye, it would appear to be genuine.  These programs use scare tactics to convince you that your system is infected and you need to scan and clean your system thus requiring you to get out your credit/debit card and purchase an upgrade.  Hover over picture on right to see blow up of rouge program.  In fact, once you purchase their software they upload and install even more viruses and spyware, thus making your computer unusable.  The end result is you get ripped off and most likely your bank card is use for fraudulent purposes, causing even more problems.  This gives most people a bad taste for making online purchases.  If you don't have virus and spyware protection you are wading in murky waters.

DMN Computer Services provides onsite and remote virus removal and tools to automatically conduct what would often amount to extensive and tedious manual removal tasks. If your system has become infected, call us.  We guarantee results.
