SEO -
Search Engine Optimization ( search engine optimizer )
What is SEO?  Simply put,
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.  At DMN Computer Services we put you on page one of Google, Bing and Yahoo.  Since most other  major search engines get a large part, if not all, of their search results from Google.  This should tell you how important Google is.

Search engine optimizers, generally are or is a program(s) that SEO Experts use that performs the optimizing.  In general, the  higher on the page, and more frequently a site appears on the search engine results page (SERP), the more visitors it will receive from the search engines.  More visitors equates to more sales.

Relevance and Popularity (authority)

Popularity -- Search engines use many factors, (literally hundreds) to decide how to rank a page, or website.  First we'll talk about popularity, of which there are two types, Domain Popularity and Page Popularity. To be ranked number One for a keyword you need to have the highest total popularity on the Internet. Lets use a scale of 1 to 100, say site A has a Domain Popularity of 75 and a Page Popularity of 25 and site B has a Domain Popularity of 60 and Page Popularity 40 and finally site C has a Domain Popularity of 60 and a Page Popularity of  50 and all three sites compete for the keyword SEO.  Which site would rank highest?  It would be site C, why? Site C has a total combined Domain and Page Popularity of 110 where sites A and B each have total combined Domain and Page Popularity of 100.  It's the total popularity that counts.  As a point of interest the Google toolbar page rank is generally between 60 and 90 days old. Not very current is it ?

Hyperlinks, especially one-way incoming links, (in my opinion) by far are the most important factor in establishing page rank. Remember that page rank and organic search listing position are not the sam, but page rank will affect organic search position.  As a point of interest  links pointing to your site from banned or bad sites do not hurt you, (you're not responsible for inbound links)  but on the other hand if you have links pointing to bad or banned sites most search engines especially Google will punish you, may even ban you from there search engine listings.

Relevance or Relevancy

Search engines measure the relationship between the queried search term with the information, (web pages) they have indexed with their web crawlers, (web spiders).  Web spiders are quite good at doing this, especially when it comes to text.  Not to say you can't get the same results using flash, it's just harder for the in-experienced SEO Professional to accomplish. Which is also the reason you find more text results than flash or video results.  Even the more experienced SEO Professional will concentrate more on text than other media.  Search engines, as of late have become really smart at determining relevancy of content.  It used to be, not to long ago you could just fill a page with your keyword, (call keyword stuffing) and you would be right at the top.  Now that is considered spamming.  This type of behavior will get you overlooked and quite possibly de-listed, (black hat techniques).

Link Relevancy

This is not the same as link popularity.  Link relevancy come from the anchor text used in a hyperlink. When you create a link to go somewhere take into consideration the destination page.  Never hyperlink the words "Click Here" to take you there, use a keyword from the destination page.  Take the following link as an example. Link Relevancy points exactly to this paragraph. Now look at this link. Click Here to read about Link Relevancy.  Both links point to this paragraph, but Google and other search engines will give more relevancy to the first.  Why?  "Link Relevancy" points to a body of text that is about link relevancy also it's a keyword for this page.   Where as "Click Here" has nothing to do with this information.  Oh, by the way "click here" is most often used to refer to download links for Adobe Reader. What, you don't believe me?  Then go to Google and type in click here.  The number one results is Adobe.

The above concepts make up a majority of Search Engine Optimization.  There is much much more...

De-Personalization

What most people and the in-experienced SEO Specialist don't know is that Google will temper it's search engine results page based on the type of links you click on in previous search results. This information is kept for 180 days.  This can return in-accurate results.  For most people this is okay and mostly helpful.  For the SEO expert this is bad. How would you feel after working on a client's site and finally getting them to what you think is a top 5 SERP only to find out the client doesn't get the same results, most likely you will look stupid and worse yet loose the client.  Just remember to add &pws=0 to the search query.   Our SEO services uses Rank Tracker.  By using a program to query the search engines, we can perform a search engine rank analysis in minutes, where as doing it by hand would take hours.

Website View

Look at your or your client's website.  Get the list of keywords that's to be used.  Go to Google search the keywords and examine the SERP's.  See who the competition is and if there is a match in topic with the competitors.  This will give you a basic incite as to whether the search terms need adjusting or not.  Keywords are very important and will be discussed later.

Domain Name Choice

So what's in a domain name. Straight to the point everything.  Well not everything but suffice to say quite a lot.  Some simple rules.....

Appearance Does Matter
There is nothing worse than to have a good working site that gets lots of traffic but everyone leaves as soon as they get there.  Don't use clashing colors, never use yellow text on red backgrounds  see what i mean or this eithe makes for very hard reading and people will leave.

Canonicalization  (What is it?)

This is where there are different ways to address the same web page.  Take this example http://www.somedomain.com.  It can be addressed in the following ways, http://somedomaing.com  http://www.somedomain.com/index.asp and finally http://somedomain.com/index.asp.  Google sees this as four different pages and splits the page rank up amongst them even thou it/s the exact same page.  The page never gets it full value of transferred page rank  A lot of SEO Experts make this mistake.

Robots.txt and SiteMap.xml -- These two files both should reside in the root of the website.  If not you can bet the site wasn't designed with SEO in mind.  The robots.txt file instructs the crawlers like Google Bing and Yahoo where they can and can't go with regards to the site.  Where as the sitemap defines the structure of the site. Take this site for instance....
/dmncomputerservices
 --Computer Services
    -- Computer Repairs
    -- Computer Upgrade
    -- Virus Removal
Notice the use of keywords in the structure of the site.  If you understand directory hierarchy you can do this yourself, provided you have access to the servers.  Otherwise you'll have to get your webmaster to do this for you.  A main theme and lesson here is keywords.  Choose the keywords and design around them.  This will produce a high ranking site on search engine results pages, but not just by itself.  There are still other factors you still have to SEO.

We will be adding more SEO Tips and Tricks  (all White Hat) on a regular basis, come back soon.

Tip: How not to give away page rank.
To not give away page rank just modify your links by adding a rel="nofollow" to you link.  Give page rank to the pages that need it.  Most people don't even realize this ever.
Example of no follow link
